Digital Sources

Review mobile phone, account and timeline evidence in one case workspace

Digital evidence is now a routine part of criminal, family, civil and regulatory matters. Mobile phone extractions, messaging exports, email accounts, location records, call history and large spreadsheet chronologies can contain some of the most important evidence in a case — but they are often difficult to review efficiently when supplied across multiple files, formats and disclosure schedules.

BriefVision’s Digital Sources module is designed to help solicitors, barristers and legal teams bring this material into a structured review environment. Investigator-supplied mobile phone data and account exports can be imported into the case, with supported data separated into specialist review views such as Messages, Emails, Locations, Contacts, Call History, Calendar, Notes, Web History, Images / Media and Phone Timeline.

Instead of reviewing each export in isolation, BriefVision makes digital source material part of the wider case record. Imported emails, messages, locations and timeline events can be searched alongside documents and other evidence. The AI-assisted review module can also use this imported data to help answer case questions, identify relevant events and surface connections between people, dates, communications and locations.

BriefVision also supports the import of large timeline-style disclosure spreadsheets. Where a case includes an Excel chronology containing mobile phone events or other digital evidence, that data can be imported into the timeline module so it becomes searchable, filterable and easier to work with. This is particularly useful for very large disclosure files — including spreadsheets with 100,000+ rows — where Excel can quickly become slow, difficult to navigate and unsuitable for detailed legal review.

The result is a single, structured workspace for reviewing digital source evidence: searchable, filterable and connected to the wider case analysis.

Messages

  • Review SMS, app messages and other supported communications in conversation threads.

  • Filter by device, account, import, source app, attachments and search terms.

  • View timestamps, participants, source details and attachments alongside the message content.

  • Search message evidence together with documents, emails, locations and timeline data.

  • Use AI-assisted review to summarise threads, answer questions and identify relevant exchanges.

  • Export full conversation threads for review, advice, conference preparation or case papers.

BriefVision’s Messages module helps legal teams review conversations extracted from mobile phones, devices and account exports. Instead of working through raw disclosure folders or spreadsheet exports, messages are organised into clear conversation threads, making it easier to follow exchanges between participants and understand the context around key communications.

The module can support messages from multiple source applications, including native SMS / text messages and, where included in the extraction, messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Discord and other app-based communications. Threads can be filtered by device or account, import, source app, attachments and search terms, helping solicitors and counsel quickly narrow the review to the conversations that matter.

Each conversation can be reviewed in a familiar message-style view, with timestamps, participants, source information and attachments kept visible. This allows users to examine not just what was said, but when it was said, which device or account it came from, and whether supporting media or files were attached.

Imported messages are also available to the wider BriefVision case tools. They can be searched alongside documents, emails, locations and timeline records, and the AI-assisted review module can use the message data to help answer case questions, summarise conversations, identify relevant exchanges and highlight links between people, dates and events.

For disclosure review, preparation of advice, conferences, hearings or trial, the Messages module gives legal teams a structured way to review high-volume communications evidence without losing sight of the wider case context.

Emails

  • Review email evidence from mobile phones, devices, mailboxes and account exports.

  • Filter by device or account, import, mailbox, folder, source, importance and attachments.

  • Search across email fields, including message content and metadata.

  • View sender, recipient, date, folder, mailbox, source and deduplication details alongside the email body.

  • Identify emails with attachments and focus review on potentially important material.

  • Open the original email or export selected emails as PDF for case preparation and advice.

  • Search emails together with documents, messages, locations and timeline evidence.

  • Use AI-assisted review to summarise emails, answer case questions and surface relevant communications.

BriefVision’s Emails module helps legal teams review email evidence extracted from mobile phones, devices, account exports and disclosure material. Emails are presented in a structured review view, with key metadata kept alongside the message content, including sender, recipient, date and time, mailbox, folder, source, attachments and importance.

Instead of manually working through exported folders or long email lists, users can filter and search across email evidence by device or account, import, mailbox, folder, source, importance and attachment status. This makes it easier to identify relevant communications, isolate material from a particular account, and focus on emails that may be important to the issues in the case.

Email evidence is also connected to the wider BriefVision workspace. Imported emails can be searched alongside documents, messages, locations and timeline events, while the AI-assisted review module can use the email data to help answer case questions, summarise email content and identify potentially relevant communications across large volumes of material.

For solicitors, barristers and case preparation teams, the Emails module provides a clearer way to review email disclosure, preserve context and bring email evidence into the broader case analysis.

  • Filter by device or account, import, source app, source module, event type, media and date range.

  • Visualise location evidence using map pins, routes and heatmaps.

  • Link location points back to supporting evidence and source records.

  • Search location data alongside documents, messages, emails, calls and timeline events.

  • Use AI-assisted review to explore location-related questions across the wider case material.

BriefVision turns extracted location data into a searchable, filterable map view. Legal teams can review GPS points, cached locations, app-derived location records and other supported geospatial evidence by device, source, event type and date range.

With map pins, route views, heatmaps, timeline playback, metadata and linked evidence, the Locations module helps solicitors and barristers understand the context of location data and how it fits with the wider case.

BriefVision turns extracted contact data into a structured review view. Legal teams can search names, phone numbers, email addresses, handles and addresses across mobile devices, address books, app data and account exports.

Contacts can be reviewed as grouped records or source rows, helping users see both the consolidated contact view and the original evidential source. This makes it easier to connect people, accounts and identifiers across messages, emails, calls, locations and timeline evidence.

Call records can be connected to related messages, contacts, notes and timeline events, helping users understand the surrounding context and place call activity within the wider case chronology

  • Identify all-day events, entries with locations and events involving attendees.

  • Use calendar records to support chronology building and timeline review.

  • Search calendar evidence alongside messages, emails, calls, locations and documents.

  • Use AI-assisted review to explore date-based questions and activity patterns across the case.

The Calendar module gives legal teams a structured way to review events, reminders, appointments and scheduling records from mobile devices and account data. Users can search by title, notes, location, attendee and calendar source, then filter by device, platform, account, import and date range.

By keeping event details, source information and metadata together, BriefVision helps solicitors and counsel understand how calendar evidence fits into the wider case chronology alongside messages, calls, emails, locations and documents.
